Ex-São Paulo player, Volpi plans season at Toluca and celebrates top scorer phase

Ex-São Paulo, goalkeeper Tiago Volpi will complete this Saturday the one-year mark of his debut for Toluca after his return to Mexican football. The following day, he starts another season for the club, in the first round of Liga MX against Necaxa. And for that, Volpi expects not only the title but also to keep from the scoring phase.

“Last season I was happy to be able to help the team with some goals scored and it is undeniable that they were moments of great happiness for me. I had performances that I consider very good, in which I made important saves and of course the goals crowned that too Unfortunately, we couldn’t achieve what we dreamed of, but I really believe that we have the quality to do that in this season that starts now”, said Volpi.

Tiago Volpi scored four goals for Toluca last season, three in the last six games. The Brazilian was the team’s main penalty taker in the final stretch of the competition. His most iconic moment occurred in the last round of the Clausura in the last Liga MX, against Necaxa, when he scored a goal with a cavadinha charge. The goalkeeper commented on his studies of penalty kicks.

“We who are goalkeepers are the most studious of penalties, kicking styles and the circumstances of the game. I already studied a lot to always increase my chances of making saves on penalties and since last season I have also studied a lot to increase my chances as a batsman,” he said.

The games against Necaxa, Toluca’s opponent in this first round of the Liga MX Apertura, have provided some special moments for Volpi. In addition to being the rival of the last and most famous goal scored, he was also the opponent of his debut game in the current team, a year ago, when he saved a penalty in the 3-1 victory.

Toluca played in the knockout stages in the last two Ligas MX played. In the 2022/23 Apertura, he was runner-up after a campaign in which the team overcame Santos Laguna and América until reaching the final against Pachuca. In the last edition, in Clausura 2022/23, it stopped in the quarterfinals, against Tigres.

“Toluca fans know and are proud of the club’s history and therefore also hope that we can bring this title home again. I don’t even have words to say how I feel with this crowd, the way they received me and welcomed me here, the way they cheer for me… It’s something that really motivates me a lot and that makes me have the success of the club as a very clear goal in mind”, he concluded.

Being the greatest champions in the history of Liga MX in its current format, Toluca has won the trophy on seven occasions. But he is looking for his first title since 2010.
