The president of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, announced that fans will decide in a popular vote the future of the coach of the national team, the Portuguese José Peseiro.
“We plan to get Nigerians to vote to hear their point of view,” Gusau said on a radio show last Saturday.
With a contract until June 30, Peseiro managed to qualify Nigeria for this year’s African Cup of Nations, despite having lost five games since taking over the team.
“We tried with foreign coaches and others from here. Maybe we haven’t found the right person yet, so the public will decide whether Peseiro should continue or leave”, added the manager.
This popular vote will also generate income, as it will be done by telephone, at a time when the NFF is suffering a severe economic crisis.
Peseiro, whose salary is US$ 70,000 (R$ 334,000 at current prices) per month, has been suffering from delays in his payments.
Many Nigerian fans feel that the manager relies too heavily on the ‘Super Eagles’ star strikers Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze.
