ATP has halved the penalty to the organizers of Wimbledon for not allowing Russians to the tournament in 2022
The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has reduced the fine of the UK Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) for preventing Russians from attending Wimbledon and other tournaments under its auspices in 2022. It is reported by the BBC.
The amount of the fine imposed in December was halved and now stands at $500,000. It is noted that the ATP will return half of the funds to the LTA after the completion of Wimbledon 2023. Also, the LTA is no longer threatened with deprivation of membership, the organization has been returned to full voting rights.
On March 31, the LTA, which organizes Wimbledon, allowed Russian and Belarusian tennis players who signed a “declaration of neutrality” to participate in the 2023 tournament. Later, information appeared that the athletes agreed to this condition.
In the spring of 2022, tennis players from Russia and Belarus were banned from playing in tournaments in the UK. Due to sanctions, domestic athletes were forced to miss Wimbledon. In response, the ATP and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) decided to strip the tournament of ranking points. In other ATP and WTA competitions, the Russians play in a neutral status.
