The Monterrey team advanced due to their best position in the table of the regular phase of the Apertura tournament.
The UANL Tigres defeated Santos Laguna of the Ecuadorian internationals Félix Torres and Ayrton Preciado on Sunday 1-0, and due to their better position in the table, they qualified for the semifinals of the Apertura-2021 Mexican soccer tournament.
The first leg of the quarterfinals ended 2-1 in favor of Santos, so the Tigres, fourth in the regular phase classification, needed a goal that Carlos Salcedo converted to tie the series against the Laguneros, fifth in the table, and move on to the next round.
Santos Laguna had the first fifteen minutes of dominance, but as time progressed the Tigres UANL became the owners of the game. His coach, the Uruguayan Guillermo Almada, included Torres and Preciado in the initial training.
The Uruguayan Nicolás López created the danger for the Tigres first at minute 19 with a shot on the edge of the area that went near the left post of goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo and then at 22 when assisting the Colombian Luis Quiñones, who finished left-handed, but a good start from the Santos goalkeeper prevented the goal.
The visitors dedicated themselves to defending themselves in the second half and gave the ball to some Tigers who did not know how to take advantage of it most of the time.
Without causing major problems for Santos, the Tigres resorted to an individuality from Salcedo, who at 82 seized a ball that the Frenchman André-Pierre Gignac left in the area, settled down and with his left leg defined the 1-0.
The Tigres rival will come out of the quarterfinal second leg later when Argentine coach Nicolás Larcamón’s Puebla, who won the first leg 2-1, visits Argentine strategist Ariel Holan’s León.
The second leg of the quarterfinals began on Saturday with the victory of the UNAM Pumas 1-3 over América, a result with which the felines advanced to the semifinal in which they will face Atlas, which eliminated Monterrey. (D)
