Inigo Pena has finished second in the consolation final of the K1-500 meters of the European Games. Peña has been at the front of the race from the beginning. In the passage through the 250 meters he was first, marking a time of 49.314. In the second section of the race he had a tough duel with the Italian Giacomo Cinti, who had to decide by means of the photo finish. Cinti has entered the finish line stopping the clock in 1:39.419 and Peña has done so in 1:39.447. Third place went to the Frenchman Etienne Hubert (1:39.627).

The Zumaia paddler has paid the effort of the last meters but he is left with a good taste in his mouth for having improved the times on Friday, both in qualifying (1:43.100) and in the semifinal (1:40.543). It must be borne in mind that Iñigo had not competed internationally in an individual boat for eleven years. After these Games he will return to the preparation of K2 for the next selective in the month of July. At stake is the qualification for the Duisburg World Cup that will be held from August 23 to 27 and in which the places for the Paris 2024 Games will begin to be distributed.

The Gipuzkoan arrived in Poland with the intention of getting into the final A of the K1-500 meters in a championship that has meant a parenthesis in a complex season. He hasn’t made it but leaves Krakow with an eleventh placebeing second in the B final and with the feeling that he is physically in a sweet moment.

Friday’s day

After several days in the Villa located in the Polish capital, not in the best conditions and without acquiring the optimal competition rhythm, Iñigo faced the qualifying round on Friday without being able to warm up since he had to be suspended due to an electrical storm. Fourth place meant he had to play the semifinal in the afternoon and after finishing seventh in it, the Basque Team athlete had to settle for a pass to the B final.
