Ultramarathoner Suggests Interval Training to Increase Running Speed

Ultramarathon coach Alexander Elkonin named a way to increase running speed without harm to health. His words are quoted by Sport-Express.

The specialist warned that increasing the speed of running can be harmful to health, as this increases the risk of injury. He advised to increase the performance gradually and contact a professional trainer in case of problems.

Elkonin said that in order to improve performance, it is necessary to regularly do special running exercises, as well as include strength training in your schedule in order to develop endurance. “You need to alternate between two techniques: maximum weights and a minimum number of approaches, as well as light loads and an increased number of repetitions,” he explained.

The specialist noted that it is also necessary to develop the ability of muscles to quickly switch between contraction and relaxation. Elkonin recommended jumping exercises for this.

Another effective way to increase your running speed, according to Elkonin, is interval training, during which you run small segments in minimal time. “To increase the rhythm at a distance of 5 kilometers, you need to master six intervals of 800 meters, for a half marathon you will have to run eight intervals of 2000 meters,” the coach explained.

Earlier, Elkonin explained the breathing technique while running. He stated that breathing should be free, deep and rhythmic, while the upper body should be relaxed.
