A belgian selection faces another major internal crisis this week after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois left concentration before the game against Estonia in the Euro Qualifiers. According to information shared by coach Domenico Tedesco, Courtois was not happy to learn that he would not assume the captain’s armband in the absence of Kevin De Bruyne.
Winger Yannick Carrasco spoke to Belgian radio RTBF this Wednesday and commented on the goalkeeper’s attitude.
“We are disappointed with his reaction. At the end of the day, he is part of the team, he is one of the three captains. An armband is just a detail. You have to show that you are a leader and a captain with your personality. He chose leave. If he was uncomfortable or not, we don’t know. But one of the reasons for his departure was also the armband”, he analyzed.
After strong statements by Tedesco confirming that Courtois left the concentration of the selection because of the armband, the Real Madrid goalkeeper defended himself on social networks and denied the coach. Carrasco explained that the matter was discussed internally, but that he has not spoken to Courtois since his departure.
Without the veteran in goal, Belgium had Matz Sels, Strasbourg’s 31-year-old goalkeeper, in the starting line-up against Estonia. The team led by Tedesco ended up winning that match by 3-0.
