On Monday afternoon, the France received Greece, at the Stade de France, in Paris (FRA), for the fourth round of Euro 2024 qualifiers, which takes place between June and July in Germany. With a single goal from Kylian Mbappé (penalty), the home team won by 1-0. The visitors were still one less in the final stage.
Thus, the French continue with 100% success in the competition and remain at the top of Group B, with 12 points added.
In turn, the Greeks, who were also undefeated, suffer the first setback in the tournament, continuing with six units, in second place. Ireland (third, with three), Netherlands (fourth, also three) and Gibraltar (lantern, with zero) complete the group.
In the next round, therefore, France will play again in front of their fans, this time against the Irish, on September 7, at 3:45 pm (Brasília time), in the Parc dos Princes. At the same time, Greece visit the Dutch, at the Philips stadium, in Eindhoven (NL).
France’s goal against Greece
The decisive goal of the match came only at the beginning of the second half. In the fourth minute, Griezmann tried to head the goal, but received a violent entry, with the sole of the opponent’s boot, and fell to the lawn with his face bleeding. After checking the VAR, the referee signaled a penalty in the play and Mbappé went to charge.
In the first attempt, the number 10 stopped in defense of Vlachodimos. However, due to an invasion, the penalty was beaten again and the 24-year-old star did not waste it, guaranteeing the French victory.
Greece’s possible reaction became even more difficult in the 23rd minute. That’s because Mavropanos stopped Kolo Muani with a bump in the half moon, when the attacker left to enter the area free of charge, and received a direct red card, leaving his team with ten on the field.
However, the Greeks continued in search of a draw and threw themselves into the attack even with their numerical inferiority. With that, they opened space for the French to take danger in the counterattacks, which were not well explored and the match ended with a triumph by the minimum score.
