South Korea and Japan are among the main destinations for Peruvian squid

The national soccer team faces its last tests before qualifying for the next World Cup against South Korea and Japan, two countries that, in commercial matters, are among the main buyers of the squid that Peru produces and exportsaccording to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur).

According to the head of this portfolio, Juan Carlos Mathews, Asia is the main destination for national squid exports: 60% of the total. China, South Korea, Thailand and Japan are among the top four Asian markets for this product.

“The Peruvian squid is highly sought after in the Asian market, being the second most important hydrobiological resource that Peru exports after the anchovy. In the export sector, It is important that the products we send to the markets stand out for their quality, thus positioning ourselves increasingly better in the world”stressed the minister.

Export figures

In general terms, between January and April of this year, Peruvian squid exports reached US$429 million, a figure three times higher than that obtained in the same period in 2022.

China is the main destination, since it concentrated 26% of total sales in the last 12 months. From January to April of this year, shipments of squid to the Asian giant totaled US$169 million, an increase of 1,016% compared to US$15 million in the same period of 2022.

South Korea and Japan rank third and fifth, respectively. The first explains 18% of the total exports of Peruvian squid in the world, totaling US$69 million between January and April, a value 112% higher than the same period in 2022; and the second represents 5% and has reached US$13 million (+84%).

“In the game of squid exports, Peru is very well positioned. Now, to further boost sales of this and other products, at Mincetur we seek to expand the number of markets in the world with negotiations with Hong Kong, for example,” added the minister.

  • The European Union is the second destination for national squid shipments, with a 25% share. At the end of April, sales totaled US$85 million (+115%).
  • The Peruvian squid is exported mainly in frozen form and a minimal part as flour and canned.
