The Bahrain Victorious team has withdrawn this Saturday from the Tour of Switzerland behind the death of his cyclist Gino Mäderwho could not overcome the injuries that occurred in a accident in the descent of the fifth stage from Thursday.

“Following the tragic loss of Gino Mäder, the Bahrain Victorious team has made the decision to withdraw from the Tour of Switzerland“, reported the team on social networks. Therefore, the Basque Pello Bilbao and his teammates will not contest the last two stages of the Swiss race.

The sixth stage on Friday was canceledand the peloton covered the last 20 kilometers of the course in a neutralized group in memory of the Swiss rider, with his teammates from Bahrain Victorious leading the pack.

Mäder passed away on Friday June 16 at the age of 26 at the Chur Hospital (Switzerland), to which he had been transferred after suffering a serious fall during the fifth stage. Mäder’s accident occurred on the final descentwhen he left the road at high speed and fell down a ravine. The Swiss runner was revived on the spot by race medical staff, who performed CPR on him, before being airlifted to hospital.

Late on Friday, the organizers of the race announced that the last two stages would be held this weekend, a decision made after consultation with Mäder’s family. However, Bahrain Victorious will not participate in them.

There were doubts about whether the Tour of Switzerland would be completed, and also about whether or not the women’s edition would start, which begins this Saturday. “After consulting with all the people involved, The management supports this decision and will try to celebrate the last two stages of the men’s race in a suitable setting.“said race director Olivier Senn.
