The former Spanish defender spent most of his career at Barça and won numerous titles, but had a troubled relationship with coach Pep Guardiola, according to the singer and Piqué’s ex-wife.
“Gerard had a very complicated relationship with Barcelona. With Guardiola he had a super tense relationship, of ‘either you go or I’ll go’. It was a situation that made him suffer a lot”, revealed Shakira.
The singer also spoke about her personal relationship with Piqué and how difficult it was to reconcile both professional lives on a personal level.
“Our relationship was very turbulent, he was a Dragon Khan (Game of Thrones character), because our professional lives never matched. It was like mixing water with oil. I was a traveler and he had to comply with his schedule”, he commented.
Gerard Piqué stayed at Barça from 2008 until his retirement in 2022. Guardiola was in charge of the Catalan club from 2008 to 2012, during which time he won 13 titles, including two Champions League and three Spanish Championships.
