In February, days after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Lewandowski pushed for the Poland-Russia game to be postponed. When he entered the field for the Bayern Munchenhis teammates wore black armbands to honor the victims of the invasion, while Lewandowski, the German club’s captain, wore an armband in the colors of Ukraine.

“I believe that as athletes, we should use the power of sport for good. I will take Andriy’s armband with me to the World Cup in November to remind that the Ukrainian people are not alone and are not forgotten.”

Lewandowski has been a staunch ally of Ukraine, while Shevchenko has traveled around Europe meeting athletes, government bodies, politicians and refugees to highlight the problems the invasion has caused.
