Anatoly Karpov called grandmaster Motylev’s decision to change citizenship strange
Russian grandmaster Anatoly Karpov appreciated the decision of Russian grandmaster Alexander Motylev to change sports citizenship to Romanian. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Karpov called the decision strange and said that he was surprised by this news, since chess players usually move to stronger teams. “I don’t know what conditions Motylev was offered in Romania,” he stressed.
Earlier on June 14, it became known that 43-year-old Motylev joined the Romanian national team. In December 2022, he was included in the list of candidates for the Russian national team for 2023 as a coach of the men’s team, as well as a reserve player in team competitions.
Motylev is the champion of Russia and Europe. The chess player takes 211th place in the ranking of the International Chess Federation. Previously, as a coach, he worked with GM Sergey Karyakin and the men’s national team.
