Ajax appoint Maurice Steijn as new coach for next season

O Ajax already have a new coach for next season. This Wednesday, the club announced Maurice Steijn, former commander of Sparta Rotterdam, for the position. He signed a three-year deal, until June 2026.

The coach stood out in the last Dutch Championship after finishing in sixth place. The choice at Ajax was surprising, as Steijn only has experience in smaller teams in the country and with a passage through the United Arab Emirates.

“Maurice is now around 20 years coaching in professional football, of which 10 years as a head coach. With all the clubs he has worked for, the results have exceeded expectations. He is ready to step up, I’m sure of that.” , said Sven Mislintat, director of football at the club.

Steijn arrives to replace Johnny Heitinga in the technical command of Ajax. The former player had been coaching the team since Alfred Schreuder’s sacking in January. Despite the improvement in performance, the board opted to look for another name in the market.

Last season, Ajax finished only third in the Dutch, behind rivals Feyenoord and PSV. This meant that the team was unable to qualify for the next Champions League, having to compete in the Europa League.
