Luis Enrique keeps doors open for Sergio Ramos, but sees better options for Spain

The coach of the Spanish national team, Luis Enrique, kept the doors open for a return of Sergio Ramos, but said that at the moment he sees other better options for the position. The coach announced the squad for the team this Friday without the name of the experienced defender.

Sergio Ramos went through a string of muscle injuries last season. In all, there were 34 games away for not being in physical condition to play. Still, the defender returned earlier this season and, to date, has participated in all the official games of the Paris Saint Germain.

“It’s great news to see Sergio Ramos on the pitch after the time he was sidelined by injuries,” the coach told a news conference on Friday. “Now we can see that he is competing, he does it continuously every three days and from then on I consider that the best players to come in the position of Sergio Ramos are the ones I have called”, explained Luis Enrique.

The ‘La Roja’ captain insisted, however, that “the doors are not closed to any Spanish player who is in activity”.

“I’ll take whoever I think is best,” said the coach, noting that “we clearly observe what players do at their clubs, but between what they do at clubs and what they do to me, I’ll stick with what they do to me.”

The call made by Luis Enrique this Friday refers to the Nations League games against Switzerland and Portugal, which will be on the 24th and 27th of this month, respectively. These matches may be the last ones before the world Cup, which will take place at the end of November. With that, the presence of Sergio Ramos in the tournament remains in doubt.
