Uruguay beats Italy to become under-20 World champion for the first time

Uruguay beat Italy on Sunday to become champions of the under-20 World Cup. The team played in the final at Estádio Ciudad de La Plata, in Buenos Aires (ARG), and built the score from 1 to 0, with a goal by Luciano Rodríguez.

The triumph came only 40 minutes into the second half. After a corner kick, the ball was deflected, it was alive in the area in a hit and rebound Rodriguez headed to score.

The conquest is unprecedented for the Uruguayans. To reach the decision, the team ended the group stage in the second position of group E. In the round of 16, they went through Gambia by 1 to 0 and then left the United States behind, by 2 to 0. In the semifinal, they beat Israel, who eliminated Brazil, by the minimum score.

This edition of the World Cup, in fact, was the resumption after the competition was stopped in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Italy, in turn, has never won the tournament and won a place in the round of 16 after ending up in group D as leader. Thus, they went through England by 2 to 1, Colombia by 3 to 1 and South Korea, again by 2 to 1, until reaching the final.

Third place

Israel beat South Korea 3-1 on Sunday to take third place in the under-20 World Cup. Ran Binyamin, Omer Senior and Anan Khalaili scored for the Israelis.

Israel achieved the best World Cup result in its history. In its only participation in a World Cup of main teams, in Mexico, in 1970, it had only played in the group stage.

South Korea faced its second tournament in the category and finished among the top four teams. In 2019, he lost the decision to Ukraine.
