Putin spoke about legionnaires in Russian football with the phrase “not bad, but everything is good in moderation”
Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about foreign players in Russian football. His words from a meeting with the governor of the Oryol region Andrey Klychkov are quoted by TASS.
Klychkov said that only local players would play in the Oryol team. “Legionnaires are not bad either, but everything is good in moderation,” Putin answered him with this phrase.
According to the regulations of the Russian Premier League (RPL), in the 2022/2023 season, teams can have no more than 13 foreign players. At the same time, no more than eight foreign players can play on the field in the matches of the national championship for one club. It is noted that football players from Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan do not belong to this category.
From March 7, 2022, foreign players could unilaterally suspend contracts with RPL clubs. This opportunity was provided to them by the International Football Federation (FIFA). However, since May 22, 2023, the organization has banned the current players of the championship from suspending contracts.
