Lionel Messi’s return to Barcelona seems to be getting closer. This Monday, the Spanish club met with the player’s father and agent, Jorge Messi, who confirmed the Argentine’s desire to return to Barca.
“Messi wants to return to Barcelona and I would love for him to return. It is an option. Do I trust that he can return? Yes”, revealed Messi’s father after the meeting with the culé president Joan Laporta. The information was given by Spanish journalist Toni Juanmartí.

Jorge Messi’s statement comes at a time when Barcelona is negotiating with the Spanish League the economic viability of a return of the Argentine star. The club has struggled to adapt to the fair play financial and Messi’s high salary would be a hindrance.
In recent weeks, Barça have announced the departure of experienced players at the end of the season to ease the payroll. In addition to Gerard Piqué, who left the club in 2022, Segio Busquets and Jordi Alba will not remain at Barcelona.
“Busquets’ departure is the beginning of the path for Messi to return. But to reach the end, there are many meters to walk. I am not the one who will give the green light, it will be his economic control”, declared the president of La Liga, Javier Thebes.
Lionel Messi arrived at Barcelona in 2000, still in the youth categories of the Catalan club. After 16 seasons with the main team, the Argentine left Barça in 2021 and transferred to Paris Saint Germain, from France. The ace signed a two-year contract, which expires from next month. This Saturday, PSG announced the departure of Messi.
In addition to Spanish football, another possibility for Messi’s future would be to play in Saudi Arabia. According to the AFP, Al-Hilal leaders traveled to Paris with the aim of signing the Argentine star.
