The head of the IOC said that only populists can be opponents of the admission of Russians to tournaments
President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach called the mistake of opponents of the admission of Russian athletes to tournaments. His words are quoted by Inside the Games.
Bach stated that extremely complex political problems cannot have an easy solution, so only populists can pretend they have the answers. “They want to try to convince them that nothing will work,” he stressed, adding that the recommendations of the IOC should be followed.
On March 28, the IOC recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be admitted to the competitions in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be suspended from participating in starts. After that, a number of federations allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to return to the competition.
At the same time, Russian athletes face problems with admission to tournaments due to complex verification. In particular, the International Fencing Federation banned Olympic champions Sofia Velikaya, Yana Yegoryan, Sofia Pozdnyakova, Olga Nikitina and nine other saber fencers from participating in competitions.
