Russian tennis player Varvara Gracheva explained the decision to change citizenship to French. Her words are quoted by Sport.pl.

The athlete said that she made a decision before the pandemic. “I have been living in France for over six years. I have a good training base, I like French culture, lifestyle, people. I want to stay here forever. I have friends here, I feel good in France,” she shared.

Gracheva said that she had submitted the necessary documents and was waiting for a French passport. “No one from Russia contacted me about changing citizenship. Not before the disclosure of this decision, not after,” she added. The athlete expressed her hope that she would be able to compete under the French flag in the Billie Jean King Cup and Roland Garros next year.

On March 27, it became known that Gracheva had passed the language tests necessary to obtain French citizenship. The 22-year-old tennis player is ranked 41st by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

At the competitions of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and WTA, Russians play in a neutral status.
