Thomas Bach said that the federations put into practice the recommendations of the IOC on the admission of Russians
President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach praised the work of sports federations to comply with the recommendations for the return of Russians to tournaments. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Bach called the situation a challenge for every international federation. “But many federations have proven that this is possible, they have organized sports competitions, including world championships, putting into practice the recommendations of the IOC and successfully holding tournaments,” he said.
The head of the IOC added that individual countries are trying to divide the global sports movement, so it is very important to maintain unity. He stressed that an example of preventing a split is the participation of Russians and Belarusians in international competitions.
On March 28, the IOC recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be admitted to the competitions in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be suspended from participating in starts. After that, a number of federations allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to return to the competition.
At the end of February 2022, most sports organizations suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus on the recommendation of the IOC.
