The last round of English Championship took place this Sunday with important definitions on the leaderboard. In the fight against relegation, Everton received Bournemouth, at Goodison Park, in Liverpool (ING), and won by 1 to 0. Abdoulaye Doucouré was the scorer of the game.
Thus, the team reached 36 points, remained in 17th place – the first outside the relegation zone – and, therefore, in the elite, in which it has competed directly since 1954/55. With that, who dropped to the second division was Leicester, who even beat West Ham, at home, by 2 to 1 – goals from Harvey Barnes, Faes and Fornals -, but only reached the 34 goals and opened the Z3, in the 18th position.
This was the Foxes’ first relegation since the 2003-04 season. The club, which returned to the elite of English football in 2013/14, won a historic Premier League title in 2015/16, as well as an FA Cup in 2020/21 and an FA Super Cup in 2021.
Play for the Conference League and relegated
With the four vacancies for the dispute of the next European Champions League defined – Manchester City (champion), Arsenal (vice-leader), Manchester United (third) and Newcastle (fourth) -, in addition to the two Europa League vacancies, belonging to Liverpool (fifth) and Brighton (sixth), the dispute was for the place in the Conference League.
Brentford, Tottenham and Aston Villa dueled to be in seventh place – the classification zone for the European competition. As they did their homework, by beating Brighton 2-1, the team of Brazilian Douglas Luiz, who scored a goal in the game, added 61 points, secured the position and, thus, the advancement to the continental tournament. Watkins, for the home team, and Undav, for the visiting team, scored the other goals.
In turn, Spurs even triumphed over relegated Leeds United, 4-1, at home, but needed to count on a stumbling block by Aston Villa. Thus, they were in eighth place, with 60 units, followed by Brentford, who beat City 1-0, in front of their fans, and finished with 59.
At the bottom of the table, Southampton, already relegated since the 36th round, received Liverpool and drew 4-4, with 25 goals. The other spot in Z3, in addition to Leicester, went to the penultimate placed Leeds, who needed to beat Tottenham and count on a defeat by Everton and a stumbling block by the Foxes to escape the sticking point. With the setback in the round, the team had 31 units.
