The number one in the world cycling classification has been chosen by the magazine ‘Vélo D’Or’ as the best of the year.
The Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates team), 23 years old, double winner of the Tour de France (2020 and 2021), has been chosen Golden Bicycle for the best international cyclist of 2021, an award for which Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (Ineos) was also a candidate, while the French award went to world champion Julian Alaphilippe.
Pogacar, winner this season of the Tour de France, Liege Bastoña Liege, Il Lombardía, Tirreno Adriatico, and number one in the UCI (International Cycling Union) world ranking, has been chosen by the magazine Golden Bike as the best of the year, ahead of his compatriot Primoz Roglic, winner of the Vuelta and winner of the award last year, and of the Belgian Wout Van Aert.
In French cycling, the best for the aforementioned magazine has been, for the third year in a row, Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step), double winner of the world champion rainbow jersey.
Three Spaniards appear on the Golden Bicycle list. Alberto Contador won the award four times (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2014), Miguel Indurain twice (1992 and 1993) and the last Alejandro Valverde in 2018.
For the 2021 prize, Olympic Road Champion (Tokyo 2020) Richard Carapaz was also on the list of nominees. The Carchense had in his letter of introduction the record of being the only cyclist in history with a gold medal in the Olympic Games and a podium in the three great tours of the sport (Italy, first in 2019; Spain, second in 2020; and France , third in 2021).
