Almeida wins the 16th stage of the Giro ending in Monte Bondone and Geraint Thomas puts on the pink jersey

Joao Almeida (UAE Emirates) won the 16th stage of the 2023 Giro d’Italia which was held this Tuesday May 23 between Sabbio Chiese and Monte Bondone with a distance of 203 kilometers. Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) is once again the leader of the race after being overtaken by the Portuguese in the final meters and finishing second in the stage. Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma), third, crossed the finish line 25 seconds from the duet.
Therefore, now, Geraint Thomas is the leader of the general classification and the Welshman has an advantage of 18 seconds over Joao Almeida who is second and 29 seconds over Roglic who occupies the third place. Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious) is fourth, 2 minutes and 50 seconds behind, while Eddie Dunbar (Jayco AlUla) is fifth, 3 minutes and 3 seconds behind the leader.
The breakaway was formed after overcoming the first kilometers of the route. Several cyclists jumped out of the peloton and the escape was made up of these 26 riders: Aurélien and Valentin Paret-Peintre (AG2R Citroen), Christian Scaroni, Vadim Pronskiy (Astana Qazaqstan), Cesare Benedetti, Patrick Konrad (Bora-hansgrohe), Jack HaigJonathan Milan (Bahrain Victorious), Thomas Champion, Jonathan Lastra (Cofidis), Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost), Mattia Bais (Eolo-Kometa), Davide Gabburo, Filippo Magli, Martin Marcellusi, Alessandro Tonelli (Green Project-Bardiani CSF-Faizané), Salvatore PuccioBen Swift (Ineos Grenadiers), Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech), Charles Verona (Movistar), Michael Hepburn, Filippo Zana (Jayco AlUla), Nicolas Dalla Valle, Veljko Stojnic (Team Corratec-Selle Italia), Toms Skujins (Trek-Segafredo) and diego ulissi (UAE Team Emirates).
With 100 kilometers to go, Benedetti attacked and led the race for a few kilometers, although it did not last long. Then Pronsliy and Scaroni left, both from Astana. They opened up a gap with respect to their breakaway companions, but were caught with 52 kilometers to go. Thus, a group of 12 cyclists remained in the lead, made up of: Aurélien and Valentin Paret-Peintre, Vadim Pronskiy, Patrick Konrad, Jack Haig, Jonathan Lastra, Ben Healy, Ben Swift, Derek Gee, Carlos Verona, Filippo Zana and Diego Ulissi .
At the first ramps of Monte Bondone, the last climb of the stage, the group of escapees was reduced to eight. ANDhe peloton picked up the pace with Jumbo Visma and UAE Emirates leading the wayand caught up with Aurelien Paret-Peintre, Pronskiy, Haig, Konrad, Swift, Verona, Zana and Ulissi.
With 8 kilometers to go, the main favorites marched together. In this way, Geraint Thomas, Sep Kuujs, Primoz Roglic, Joao Almeida, Filippo Zana and Eddie Dunbar faced the final stretch of the climb at the head of the race.
It was Almeida who attacked 6 kilometers from the endbut Kuujs closed the gap opened by portuguese. However, just at that moment Thomas attacked and together with Almeida he pushed forward. Roglic relented. The Slovenian was not able to keep up with his main rivals. Kuujs tried to keep his team leader wasting as little time as possible, and Dunbar caught up with them.
In the end, Almeida and Thomas played a sprint and the Portuguese prevailed to Welsh. Primoz Roglc entered the finish line in third position, 25 seconds behind and Dunbar arrived close to the Slovenian which was fourth
