IOC chief Bach thanked the G7 for supporting their recommendations regarding the participation of Russians
President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach spoke about the G7 statement on the admission of Russian athletes to the competition. His words are given on the website of the organization.
Bach thanked the G7 for supporting their recommendations regarding the participation of Russians as individual neutral athletes. “This commitment to the autonomy of sports organizations comes at a crucial moment when several governments threaten it,” the head of the IOC said. He expressed hope that international sport could unite the world.
On May 19, the leaders of the G7 at the summit in Hiroshima stated that they respect the independence of sports organizations. At the same time, they considered that the Russians should not participate in competitions with their own flag and anthem.
On March 28, the IOC announced the possibility of admitting Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine to the competitions in a neutral status. Since then, a number of federations have followed the recommendations of the IOC.
At the same time, Russian athletes face problems with admission to tournaments due to complex verification. In particular, the International Fencing Federation banned Olympic champions Sofia Velikaya, Yana Yegoryan, Sofia Pozdnyakova, Olga Nikitina and nine other saber fencers from participating in competitions.
