Earlier in the year, in February, Brazil was undefeated champion of the South American in the category and thus guaranteed its place in the World Cup. Of the 21 players called up for the World Cup, 15 are remnants of Ramon Menezes’ team that dominated the continent.
Brazil’s last World Cup title came in 2011, when the team was represented by big names in current football, such as Philippe Coutinho, Casemiro, Oscar, Danilo and Dudu. Brazil’s most recent participation in the under-20 World Cup was in 2015, as the team was left out of the 2017 and 2019 editions.
In all, the team has won five U-20 World Cup titles and is the second biggest winner of the championship, behind only Argentina, which has six.
Ramon Menezes will participate in his first under-20 World Cup as a coach, but he already participated in the championship as an athlete in 1991, alongside big names like Roberto Carlos, Paulo Nunes, Sérgio Manoel and Djair. Brazil was runner-up in that edition.
After the debut against Italy, the Brazilian team returns to the field on Wednesday and next Saturday to face the Dominican Republic and Nigeria, respectively. The top two teams in the group advance to the Round of 16, as do the four best third-place teams.
