The Independent Commission against Corruption (ICAC) used about 100 agents on Monday to arrest a total of 23 people.
“This operation is the most important of recent years by the ICAC against arranged games,” said Kate Cheuk, head of the investigation, at a press conference this Tuesday.
Those arrested are suspected of corruption, match-fixing and illegal betting, Cheuk said.
The ICAC did not disclose the name of the team in question, but according to the local press, it is Happy Valley, a historic club that has won several titles in its 70 years of foundation.
Investigators explained that the team was one of 14 in the first division that had eight wins in 26 games, which is the case of Happy Valley, tenth in the league. championship.
Players reportedly received up to HK$10,000 (approximately R$6,000 at current exchange rates) for each manipulated game.
