marlen russer has won the general victory in Itzulia Women 2023 by surprise by winning alone in the third and final stage ahead of her partner and undisputed leader to date Demi Vollering and the rest of the favorites who have marched for kilometers at the head of the race .
The tour of the third and final stage, 114.8 kilometersnailed the route of the Clásica de San Sebastián, with three scoring ports, including Jaizkibel, from 1st, and Mendizorrotz, from 2nd.
The race has begun to define 35 kilometers to the finish line with a group of 19 runners in the lead in which all the favorites of the general and also the Zarauztarra Usoa Ostolaza were going.
On the ascent to Mendizorrotz, the last scoring port of the day, the leading group began to lose units. In it were Demi Vollering, Marlen Reusser, Katarzyna Niewiadoma, Olivia Baril and Annemiek Van Vleuten, the top five overall.
At 30 kilometers from the finish line he has arrived the attack that has definitively broken the race and Itzulia. Annemiek Van Vleuten, 40 years old, has pulled hard and has left with the leader Vollering at her wheel. Together they have crowned Mendizorrotz and have started a descent in which Van Vleuten has risked more and has managed to gain a few meters of distance with respect to the yellow jersey.
Behind, the rest of the favorites rolled half a minute away.
With 18 kilometers to go, Van Vleuten, who was fifth overall, and Vollering were in the lead with a group of three riders behind: Reusser, Niewadoma and Baril.
last kilometers
The five have joined the same group with 14 kilometers to go. The attacks between them have followed one another without truce but it has been Marlen Reusser the one that has managed to open a gap definitively. Vollering’s teammate and second overall is a great roller and specialist against the clock, and that, logically, has played in her favour.
The differences have been increasing little by little, and the Swiss has left in nothing the 56 seconds that Vollering took in the general. Thus, Reusser has appeared at the finish line alone to achieve a great victory and with a more than comfortable advantage of 2:38 about the group of persecutors, among them the already dethroned overall leader, Demi Vollering. Marlen Reusser has thus culminated a round day, with a stage victory and victory also in the general of Itzulia Women 2023.
