Demi Vollering (SD Works) won the first stage of the Itzulia Women 2023 this Wednesday May 12 and put on the leader’s jersey. your teammate Marlen Reusser (SD Works) was second to 47 seconds and Katarzyna Niewiadoma (CANYON//SRAM Racing) third 49 seconds behind the winner. Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar) crossed the finish line in fourth position 51 seconds behind Vollering.
The cyclists faced a 122 kilometer route starting in Etxebarria and ending in Markina-Xemein. In addition, they had to face rain and wind.
Miryan Nunez (Massi Tactic Women’s Team) made the first breakaway attempt. However, the peloton was not willing to allow escapes to be created and hunted down the Ecuadorian 74 kilometers from the finish line.
Afterwards, there were several escape attempts, but the peloton gave no options. Even so, with 43 kilometers to go before the end of the stage, they jumped out of the peloton Anna Kiesenhofer (Israel-Premier Tech Roland) and Aurela Nerlo (Massi Tactic Women’s Team). The duel rolled a few kilometers at the head of the race, but their advantage did not exceed 35 seconds at any time and they were absorbed by the main group before beginning the ascent to Urkaregi, a second-category port.
Over there, on the climb to Urkaregi, the fight between the favorites began. Demi Vollering attacked as soon as the climb began. Little by little, the Dutch woman opened a gap and she was left alone at the head of the race. Behind, the trio of Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar), Marlen Reusser (SD Works) and Katarzyna Niewiadoma (CANYON//SRAM Racing) tried to lose as little time as possible.
Little by little, Vollering’s lead increased and he finished the pass with a 51-second advantage over the chasing trio, which became a foursome with the addition of Olivia Barril (UAE Team ADQ).
The descent was dangerous, since the road was wet. Vollering did not risk, and from behind there were no falls either. So, Vollering was victorious. Reusser rounded off the day for the SD Works team finishing second to 47 seconds. Niewiadoma was third 49 seconds behind the winner and Van Vleuten fourth to 51 seconds of Vollering.
In the general classification Vollering leads Reusser by 51 seconds (second), at 55 to Niewiadoma (third) and in 1’01 to Van Vleuten (quarter).
