Groves prevails in the fifth stage of the Giro after a festival of rain and falls, Leknessund remains the leader

Kaden Groves (Alpecin Deceuninck) won the sprint in the fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia disputed between Atripalda and Salerno, 171 kilometers long, marked by persistent rain and the festival of falls, which affected, among others, top seed Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step).

Victory for Groves (Gympie, 24 years old), in a finish reduced by falls, in which the British Mark Cavendish landed on the asphalt, dragging himself into the finish line. In the midst of the chaos, the Norwegian Andreas Leknessund (DSM) kept the leader’s pink jersey.

Gandin (Corratec), Champion (Arkea) and Zoccarato (Bardiani) were the stars of the day’s break. They rode together at the head of the race until the last 20 kilometers. Then, Zoccarato attacked, and was left alone in front of the race. The Italian rode at the head of the race until the peloton caught up with him 8 kilometers from the finish line.

A fall 7 kilometers from the finish line affected Roglicwho rejoined the platoon, after 2.8 kilometers from the end Evenepoel fell for the second time. The peloton was reduced for the sprint, and on the finish line Groves attacked from a distance to score the stage. The drama hovered over the line with Cavendish on the floor.

Very eventful day, passed through water, which did not produce changes in the general. Leknessund continues to dream of pink with 28 seconds over Evenepoel, without major injuries after a double crash, and 30 over Frenchman Aurelien Paret Peintre (Ag2r). Roglic, without complicated injuries, is fifth, 1’12” behind the leader.

Two falls from Evenepoel

The fifth stage of the Giro was not the best for Remco Evenepoel. The Belgian cyclist fell twice. The first time the Belgian fell was at kilometer 20: Evenepoel crashed onto the asphalt because of an uncontrolled dog that crossed him on the road. The cyclist wearing the rainbow jersey walked on the ground, but luckily without consequences. Afterwards, he got up, changed bikes and was able to link up with a peloton that was waiting for the World Champion.

However, with 2.8 kilometers to go, Remco Evenepoel himself crashed again. He was able to get up again and finished the stage. In addition, when the fall occurred within the last 3 kilometers of the stage, the Belgian wasted no time.
