Foreign Ministries of Latvia and Liechtenstein opposed the admission of Russians to the 2024 Olympics

Latvian Foreign Minister Edgar Rinkevich and his colleague from Liechtenstein Dominik Hasler opposed the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. It is reported by The Baltic Times.

Rinkevich said that small European countries should clearly state their position on this issue. He stressed that the leaders of authoritarian states tend to mix cultural and sporting events with politics, while trying to convince the world otherwise.

On May 2, Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin said that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) would announce its position on the participation of Russians in the 2024 Olympics no earlier than July 26, 2023. A year later on that day, competitions in Paris will begin.

On March 28, the IOC recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be suspended from participation in the starts. It was noted that teams from these countries cannot be considered as participants in the competition.
