Fans with St. George’s ribbons removed from the stands at the World Judo Championships in Qatar
Russian fans who came to the World Judo Championship in Doha, Qatar with St. George ribbons, caused a scandal. It is reported by Inside the Games.
A representative of the International Judo Federation (IJF) said that the organizers of the tournament asked the fans to remove the symbols, but they refused to do so. After that, the fans were removed from the stands of the arena. “They won’t be able to attend competitions anymore,” he said.
The return of Russian judokas to tournaments became known on April 29. The IJF said they are against discrimination in sports. After checking biographical data and social networks, eight representatives of the Russian team were refused admission to the World Cup.
The World Judo Championship takes place from 7 to 14 May in Doha. The Russians will perform at it in a neutral status.
