A sector of the stands at the Atalanta stadium in Bergamo will be closed during a game. The measure was taken as a form of punishment after the discriminatory insults against the Serbian striker of the JuventusDusan Vlahovic.
Vlahovic, scorer of Juve’s second winning goal, was the target of racist chants on several occasions towards the end of the match from “80% of the 9,000 occupants” of the northern sector of the Gewiss Stadium, according to the disciplinary commission.
These chants were repeated despite the intervention of the Atalanta players and boos from the rest of the crowd. Upset with the insults, Vlahovic received a yellow card for having asked the local fans to silence after celebrating his goal, scored in the second half stoppage time.
After the game, Brazilian winger Alex Sandro, the Serbian’s teammate at Juventus, called for “a more severe law” against manifestations of racism.
Racist incidents are frequent in Italian stadiums. The club’s fans were also the protagonists of discriminatory cries against the Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, from Inter Milanduring a Coppa Italia game in early April.
Lukaku was subsequently sent off after receiving a second yellow card for celebrating a goal in a provocative manner.
