The IBU said that 70 percent of athletes support the removal of Russians from tournaments
The head of the commission of athletes of the International Biathlon Union (IBU), Claire Egan, spoke about the attitude of athletes to the removal of Russians and Belarusians from tournaments. Her words are reported by Sport-Express.
Egan said the commission conducted a survey in April among active athletes. “We received about 160 responses from representatives of 31 countries. Approximately 70 percent of athletes support the current suspension, ”she shared.
On March 28, the International Olympic Committee recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be suspended from participation in the starts.
Russians and Belarusians did not participate in international tournaments in the 2022/2023 season by decision of the IBU. The order came into effect in March 2022 and will remain in effect until further notice.
