Anatoly Karpov explained the defeat of Yang Nepomniachtchi to Liren with the words “there was not enough stamina”
Russian grandmaster Anatoly Karpov explained the defeat of Ian Nepomniachtchi in the match for the world title against the Chinese Ding Liren. His words are quoted by Match TV.
“He didn’t have enough stamina, somewhere his nervous system failed, he had a lot of chances,” Karpov said, adding that the Chinese chess player showed more resourcefulness. He noted that Nepomniachtchi should be praised for reaching the final, and Liren should be congratulated on his victory.
Earlier on April 30, Nepomniachtchi, for whom this was his second attempt at the world chess crown, lost to Liren in the fourth tie-break game. The first three games ended in a draw. The final score is 2.5-1.5. The Chinese became the 17th world champion.
The last world champion was the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, who had previously refused to defend the title, citing a lack of motivation. In December 2021, he beat Nepomniachtchi 7.5:3.5.
