Chinese Ding Liren beat Russian Nepomniachtchi and became world chess champion
Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi lost in the fight for the title of world chess champion to the Chinese Ding Liren. The broadcast was conducted on the YouTube channel of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
The 32-year-old Nepomniachtchi, for whom this was the second attempt to win the world chess crown, played with white pieces and lost in the fourth tie-break game. The first three games ended in a draw. The final score is 2.5-1.5. The Chinese became the 17th world champion.
Prior to this, chess players played 14 games of the match for the world title with classical time control. The series ended with the score – 7:7.
The last world champion was the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, who had previously refused to defend the title, citing a lack of motivation. In December 2021, he beat Nepomniachtchi 7.5:3.5.
