Interim at Manchester United, Carrick says he is “saddened” by Ole’s departure: “It was a pleasure working with him”

Michael Carrick, idol of Manchester United as a player, he is the team’s interim coach after the output of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The ex-wheel was part of the Norwegian’s technical committee and said he was “saddened” by the commander’s departure.

“Watching Ole lose his job yesterday was difficult for me. You could tell from the emotion around him how much people respect him,” Carrick told a news conference.

But United don’t have much time to grieve. The team faces Villarreal this Tuesday, in Spain, for the Uefa Champions League. “It’s a big game tomorrow (Tuesday) and I will do the job as I do. We are positive. It’s a fantastic football game and we will be tested, but these are unforgettable nights. I’m really looking forward to it,” said Carrick.

United are second in Group F with seven points, the same score as Villarreal. At Old Trafford the English won 2-1.

Next steps

Now United are thinking about their future without Solskjaer. The English press begins to spread the name of Mauricio Pochettino, coach of Paris Saint-Germain, as a target of the board.

Another possibility is to leave Carrick as interim until the end of the season and look for a new manager for 2022/2023. The fact is that the team needs to get back on its feet if it still wants to fight for big things in 2021/2022.
