Reuters: Russian tennis players signed a declaration of neutrality to participate in Wimbledon
Russian tennis players have signed a declaration of neutrality in order to participate in Wimbledon 2023. It is reported by Reuters.
“We listened to last year’s feedback from athletes. They wanted to have the right to choose and be able to sign the declaration. They fully understand what they are signing up for,” said Sally Bolton, chief executive of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC). She did not disclose the number of athletes who signed the document and their names.
On March 31, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), which organizes Wimbledon, announced its decision to allow Russian and Belarusian tennis players to participate in the tournament in 2023. It was clarified that athletes will be able to take part in it only in a neutral status and only after signing a “declaration of neutrality”.
In the spring of 2022, Russian tennis players were refused admission to tournaments in the UK, which is why domestic athletes were forced to miss Wimbledon. In other competitions, the Russians perform in a neutral status.
