Athletic Club won the victory against Almería (1-2) this Saturday, April 22, in the match that was played at the Power Horse stadium, corresponding to matchday 30 of LaLiga Santander. Therefore, the Biscayan team is close to the European positions.
Summary of the match Almería – Athletic Club
After the third consecutive victory for the team led by Ernesto Valverde, Athletic has 46 points and is one below Villarreal (47 points), although the Castellón team must play against Sevilla on Monday in the clash corresponding to matchday 30. In addition, the rojiblancos have been two points behind a Betis (48 points) that is fifth.
Almería took possession of the ball in the initial moments of the match and created danger over the Athletic Club goal, but without creating clear scoring chances. The Biscayan team was behind in the first minutes; however, in his first approach to the rival area Nico Williams left all his opponents behind, entered the area and beat goalkeeper Fernando (0-1).
After the goal that opened the scoring, Athletic took possession of the ball. It is true that Luis Suárez tested Unai Simón with a shot in the 10th minute that was saved by the Alava goalkeeper, but the Bilbao team was able to score the second goal in the 14th minute, although Iñaki Williams missed the target. Ten minutes later, it was Sancet who missed a clear chance. Almería’s response came in the 28th minute through a shot from Robertone that went just wide.
Afterwards, both teams were imprecise, they played hastily, and the game came to rest with a goal ahead for Athletic.
Valverde made a change at the start of the second part; Berenguer replaced Iñaki Williams. Athletic jumped onto the pitch better than their rival and a few minutes into the second half Iñigo Martínez smashed the ball into the post after a good header.
The visiting team’s superiority increased as the minutes passed, and in the 56th minute Óscar De Marcos made it 0-2 on the scoreboard after receiving a pass from Sancet and beating Fernando with a good shot.
The second goal boosted an Athletic team that had three clear scoring chances to seal the game: Berenguer missed a shot he made from inside the area in the 63rd minute, Zarraga missed the goalkeeper in the 67th minute, and Sancet finished off high in 70.
The Bizkaia team forgave too much, left Almería alive, and although the local team did not generate clear scoring chances, in the extension Centelles scored 1-2 for his people after a bolea shot.
That great goal came in the 92nd minute, when least expected, and gave Almería hope. Athletic had to suffer more than necessary, but Valverde’s men remained firm in defense and victory did not escape them.
