Patxi Izco, former president of Osasuna, passed away this Friday, April 21 of 2023 in Pamplona at the 77 years old. Club Atlético Osasuna has lamented his death on its social networks.
izco He was president of the Pamplona club between 2022 and 2012. During his tenure, the first men’s team remained in the First Division, reached his first Copa del Rey final and to the UEFA semi-finals. In the 2004-2005 Copa del Rey, the rojillos were runners-up after losing the final against Betis (2-1) at the Vicente Calderón. In the 2006-2007 UEFA semifinals, Osasuna was beaten by Sevilla who ultimately won the title, after winning the first leg 1-0 and losing the second leg 2-0.
In 2002, Izco prevailed in the presidential elections from Osasuna, happening to Javier Miranda Martínez, with 76% of the votes, going hand in hand with the Mexican coach Javier Aguirre. With Izco in charge, the team was runner-up in the Copa del Rey in 2005 and a year later finished fourth in LaLiga Santander, which gave them the right to play in the Champions League the following year.
SHe ran for re-election in 2006, winning unopposed and with ‘Cuco’ Ziganda as the new coach after ‘Vasco’ left for Atlético de Madrid, and the team reached the semifinals of the UEFA Cup. In 2010 he won the elections again and in 2012 he resigned from the presidency.
In 2015 he was arrested for alleged diversion of capital during his tenure at the helm of the cluband in 2021 he was sentenced to 23 months and 15 days in prison for a continued crime of misappropriation and false accounting and compensation of 1,154,762.84 euros for unjustified outflows of money from the coffers of the Navarrese club.
