Olympic champion Subbotina called the participation of transgender people in tournaments wrong
Four-time world champion in synchronized swimming Varvara Subbotina assessed the admission of transgender people to participate in tournaments in the United States. Her words are quoted by RT.
The athlete called this decision wrong. “In my opinion, a man should perform in the men’s categories, and a woman, respectively, in the women’s. It would be extremely strange to mix both sexes in this sport, ”said the Olympic champion.
Earlier on April 20, the United States Synchronized Swimming Federation (USAAS) allowed athletes to independently choose a gender category based on their identity. Competitors in USAAS competitions will not be required to provide evidence of hormone therapy or surgery.
In January 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) published new guidelines for the participation of transgender people in competition. Such athletes will no longer be required to lower their testosterone levels in order to be eligible for women’s competition.
