Secretary General Maxim Mitrofanov revealed the position of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) on the membership of the Russian Football Union (RFU) in the organization. His words are reported by RIA Novosti.
Mitrofanov said that UEFA wants the RFU to remain a member of the organization. “We are negotiating with UEFA to lift the ban and restore it. The negotiations are going hard. These are long conversations that go on all the time, ”he explained and called the situation urgent.
Earlier, the head of the RFU, Alexander Dyukov, spoke about the prospect of moving to the Asian Football Confederation. He stated that everything is theoretically possible, but the organization is betting on a return to matches in Europe.
On February 28, 2022, the International Football Federation and UEFA excluded Russian teams and clubs from international tournaments. Domestic teams do not play in European competitions, and the Russian team was deprived of the opportunity to compete for reaching the finals of the 2022 World Cup.
