Russian clients of the Bank of Cyprus in recent days began to receive notifications about the closure of their accounts. It is reported by TASS.
According to the agency, we are talking about Russian citizens who do not permanently reside in Cyprus and do not have passports from other European countries. It is noted that if the clients who received the notification letter from the bank do not take any action, the Bank of Cyprus reserves the right to “take any action necessary to terminate the provision of services” on the part of the institution. He may also charge fees “according to the bank’s latest price list”.
The local publication Economy Today writes that the recent revision of risk categories for Russian citizens by the FATF forced Cypriot banks to take these measures. The FATF recommendation reportedly placed Russians on a “grey list” along with citizens of other countries as “high-risk customers.”
At the same time, the media emphasizes that Russians who have Cypriot citizenship or legally reside in the state will allegedly not be affected by these measures.
