The Russian national team refused to participate in the CAFA tournament due to the excessive load on the players
The Russian national team will not take part in the tournament of the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA). This was announced by the Secretary General of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Maxim Mitrofanov RIA Novosti.
“We sent an official letter to CAFA, thanked our colleagues. We have a number of organizational difficulties. We were forced to refuse,” Mitrofanov said. He noted that the decision was made due to the excessive burden on the players.
The CAFA Championship with the participation of men’s national teams will be held from 9 to 21 June 2023 in Kyrgyzstan. It is expected that all six members of the association, namely Tajikistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan, will play in the tournament.
On February 28, 2022, the International Football Federation and the Union of European Football Associations excluded Russian teams and clubs from international tournaments. Domestic teams do not play in European competitions, and the Russian team was deprived of the opportunity to compete for reaching the finals of the 2022 World Cup.
