FIBA suspended the Russian team from participation in the qualification for the Olympic Games-2024
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) suspended the Russian national team from participation in the qualification for the Olympic Games in Paris. This was reported on the website of the organization.
“In accordance with the recommendations of the IOC on the participation of athletes with a Russian or Belarusian passport in international competitions, the FIBA Executive Committee has decided not to allow the registration of the Russian men’s team in the FIBA pre-qualification tournaments for the 2024 Olympic Games,” the release states. It is noted that the Russian national team will be replaced by the Bulgarian team as the next national team from Europe in the ranking.
On March 28, the IOC recommended that Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be suspended from participating in tournaments.
In March 2022, FIBA suspended Russian national teams and clubs from participating in competitions under its auspices. The sanctions also affected teams in 3v3 basketball.
