Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina called the admission of Russians to Wimbledon sad
Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina revealed the reaction of compatriots to the participation of Russians in international tournaments. Her words are quoted by Ubitennis.
The athlete said that Ukrainians do not understand the decision of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) not to disqualify Russians and Belarusians. The champion of 18 WTA tournaments called it sad that the organizers of Wimbledon came under pressure from organizations and eventually allowed representatives of these countries.
On March 31, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), which organizes Wimbledon, admitted Russian and Belarusian tennis players to the tournament in 2023. Earlier it was reported that sanctions could be imposed on the organization due to the ban imposed on athletes.
In the spring of 2022, Russian tennis players were refused admission to tournaments in the UK, which is why domestic athletes were forced to miss Wimbledon. In other ATP and WTA competitions, the Russians play in a neutral status.
