President of Ukraine Zelensky imposed sanctions against coach Averbukh and football player Akinfeev

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has imposed sanctions on a number of Russian athletes, including figure skating coach and choreographer Ilya Averbukh and CSKA Moscow football player Igor Akinfeev. The decree is available on the website of the office of the President of the country.

According to the document, the restrictive measures will be in effect for ten years. The list also included, in particular, figure skaters Ivan Bukin, Nikita Katsalapov, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva and Dmitry Aliev, football players Yuri Gazinsky and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, gymnasts Artur Dalaloyan and Svetlana Khorkina, skier Veronika Stepanova.

On April 14, the Ministry of Sports of Ukraine banned Ukrainian athletes from participating in competitions with Russians and Belarusians. In response, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said that the Ukrainian government does not have the right to decide which athletes can participate in international competitions.

At the end of February 2022, most sports organizations suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus on the recommendation of the IOC. The decision on the participation of representatives of these countries in the 2024 Olympic Games has not yet been made.
