Former German soccer player Thomas Hitzlsperger, April ambassador for Athletic’s 125th anniversary

Former German soccer player Thomas Hitzlsperger, “one of the biggest world leaders in favor of diversity and against homophobia”has been chosen ambassador of the month of April of the 125th anniversary of Athleticas announced this Wednesday by the Bilbao club.
Hitzlsperger, who In 2014, he publicly announced his homosexuality. After his last active season in the ranks of Everton, he joins, thus, in these honorary appointments from Athletic, golfer Jon Rahm, pelotari Jokin Altuna and former Palestinian player Honey Thaljieh. The former international soccer player will receive his badge next Saturday, in the San Mamés box, in the run-up to the derby between Athletic and Real.
The Biscayan club values Hitzlsperger as a person of “great importance, for the values he represents and for the courage and determination with which he has defended his identity in often hostile circumstances.”
The former German player will be in Bilbao until Monday, and, as Athletic progresses, he is scheduled to visit Lezama, to have “a meeting in which he will talk with the coaches about sexual diversity and sport.”
Hitzlsperger was trained in the Bayern Munich academy, and was international with Germany on 52 occasions, playing in the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008. Between 2001 and 2014, he developed his professional career at Aston Villa, Chesterfield, Stuttgart, Lazio, West Ham, Wolfsburg and Everton.
