The Premier League announced on Tuesday that it will organize a pre-season tournament with six clubs in the United States, with Chelsea and Newcastle as main attractions.
Aston Villa, Brentford, Brighton and Fulham are the other four participants in a competition that will be called the “Premier League Summer Series”. It will take place from the 22nd to the 30th of July, in five cities on the east coast.
“Our clubs have incredible fans across the United States who follow their teams passionately throughout the season,” Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said in a statement.
American investors in elite English clubs have increased in recent years. Aston Villa, Chelsea and Fulham, among the participants in the tournament, have American owners, as is the case of Arsenal, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Leeds, LiverpoolWest Ham e Manchester Unitedalthough the latter may change its main shareholder soon.
The main fixture of the pre-season tournament will be Chelsea v Brighton in Philadelphia on July 22, before Fulham v Brentford and Newcastle v Aston Villa are played at the same stadium the following day.
Six other games will be played in Atlanta, Orlando, Harrison and Landover.
The Premier League had already organized a “Premier League Asia Trophy”, which was played every two years and which had nine editions held in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
