One of the main players in Monaco is in trouble with the Spanish tax authorities. According to the newspaper Sportstriker Wissam Ben Yedder was sentenced to six months in prison by the Provincial Court of Seville on account of tax offences.
The penalty is related to the period that the athlete played in Spanish football. The Frenchman defended Sevilla’s shirt between 2016 and 2019, when he omitted part of the amount he received from the club. Ben Yedder was also ordered to pay a fine of approximately €133,000 (R$726,000 at current exchange rates).
Despite the sentence, the court announced that the sentence will be suspended for a period of two years, in which the player will not be able to commit tax infractions. Ben Yedder’s defense reached an agreement with the court and agreed to the sentence.

This is not the first case involving footballers facing tax offenses in Spain. Brazilian Neymar also had to answer to the tax authorities for irregularities in his transfer to Barcelona, in 2013. Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo also had problems when they played in the country.
This season, Ben Yedder is Monaco’s main piece in charge of attack. The team captain is the one who scored the most for the team in the French Championship, with 17 goals. The club is in fourth place in the table and fights for a place in the next Champions League.
